When Dads Help Out at Home…the Father Daughter Relationship
Current research shows that when dads help out at home it can have a big effect on their daughters careers. Seeing dad participating in the chores at home helps promote gender equality between husband and wife. It gives his daughter a view of the world that is not so rigidly divided between “men do this and women do that.” The flexibility of the parents gender roles really demonstrates gender equality. It is not just something that is talked about but is practiced by the parents.
Here is a video of Alyssa Croft discuss her study, which finds that fathers’ who do household chores bolster their daughters’ career aspirations.
Linda Nielsen, professor of educational and adolescent psychology and the author of Father-Daughter Relationships: Contemporary Research & Issues, also comments on the important influence of dads: “The well-fathered daughter is also the most likely to have relationships with men that are emotionally intimate and fulfilling. During the college years, these daughters are more likely than poorly-fathered women to turn to their boyfriends for emotional comfort and support and they are less likely to be “talked into” having sex. As a consequence of having made wiser decisions in regard to sex and dating, these daughters generally have more satisfying, more long-lasting marriages.
